Updates to Community's Quality of Life Indicators
Links to education & lifelong learning updates

Online graphs and data metrics have been updated for the educational infrastructure to meet community needs indicator, including special needs education opportunities and use of technology for learning.  Adequate educational support, including textbooks, repairing old schools or providing technology for specialized needs, provides access to educational opportunities for all students.  Unfortunately, the Washoe County School District (WCSD) continues to lag behind the state in the percentage of classroom instructional computers with Internet access.

Updates for the educational success indicator include high school dropout and graduation rates, alternative educational opportunities and student test scores.  Although the high school dropout rate increased slightly last year, the improvement in the African American dropout rate is especially encouraging.  WSCD high school graduation rates continue to be higher than the state and Washoe County students have higher pass rates than students statewide in all three high school proficiency areas used to monitor student achievement.

Community-wide involvement in education updates include parent/teacher conference attendance.  Data for fall 2008 showed that Palmer Elementary School was the only new addition to the list with parental attendance below 90%, while Lemon Valley was the only elementary school not to improve parental attendance since 2004.

Excel data tables can be downloaded and used internally by 2008 TMT members.
